Ali Mukawwas

Syria (b.1955)

Syrian artist Ali Mukawwas graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Damascus in 1978. He went on to become a professor of visual arts, teaching across the Middle East in Syria, the UAE and Algeria. Mukawwas’ work has become known for his depictions of trees, a recurring theme throughout his body of work. His paintings are executed in neutral, earthy tones and often portray people gathering around a tree, reflecting on the binding relationship between nature and humankind. His work can be found in important private and public collections including the Museum of Modern Art in Syria and the British Museum.
