Abdulqader Al Rassam

Iraq (18821952)

Abdulqader Al Rassam was one of the pioneering figures of first generation Iraqi artists who trained abroad, bringing back their newfound knowledge to Iraq at the turn of the century.  Al Rassam is known for being part of the group of artists who introduced easel painting, with his work reflecting everyday village life, landscapes and portraiture in Iraq. Heavily inspired by his hometown, his contributions to Iraqi modern art were vast, credited with raising awareness for the arts, and the coming together of like-minded artists.

His work is held in important private and public collections worldwide. Al Rassam’s work was part of the priceless works of art and artefacts looted and destroyed from the Museum of Modern Art in Iraq during the US military invasion.
