Abu Subhi Al Tinawi

Syria (18881973)

Abu Subhi Al Tinawi is one of the most significant Syrian folk artists in the canon of Syrian art history. Al Tinawi came from a family of tapestry artisans and glass-painters, where he honed his own creativity. He made his own paints using natural pigments and Arabic gum. Al Tinawi first became known for reverse glass painting but continued his craft using cloth. His work depicts history, and folk tales, as well as religious motifs, using bold colour and his distinct characters. He rose to popularity for his talent of storytelling through art. 

His work is housed in various private and public collections worldwide including the Dalloul Foundation and the Louvre, Paris.
