Ahmed Sabri

Egypt (18891955)

Ahmed Sabri was one of the first generation of modern artists in Egypt. In 1910, he began his studies at the Fine Arts School, created by Price Youssef Kamal, from which he graduated in 1914. Soonafter, he moved to Paris to further his artistic pursuits at the Academie de La Grande Chaumiere, and Academie Julian. Upon his return to Egypt, he continued working as both illustrator, and artist when he earned a scholarship to return back to  Paris to further his training. His most notable artwork “The Nun” was exhibited at the Grand Palais in 1929, and won the Prix d’honneur by the French Arts Society.

He returned back to his homeland and began teaching at the School of Fine Arts, where he was professor until 1951. Many of Egypt’s well-known modern artists were his students during this period, including Hamed Owais, Hussein Bicar and Salah Taher.
