Hangama Amiri

Afghanistan (b.1989)

Hangama Amiri earned her Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from Yale University in 2020, specialising in the Painting and Printmaking Department. She completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) at NSCAD University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and was awarded a Canadian Fulbright Scholarship, serving as a Post-Graduate Fellow at Yale University’s School of Art and Sciences from 2015 to 2016. Her artwork has been featured in prominent exhibitions, including the Toronto Biennial 2024, T293 Gallery, Cooper Cole Gallery, Mönchehaus Museum Goslar, the Aga Khan Museum, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, and Sharjah Biennial 15.

Amiri primarily employs textiles as her medium to investigate themes of home, identity, and the intersection of gender, societal expectations, and geopolitical tensions, particularly as they affect the lived experiences of Afghan women, both within Afghanistan and in the diaspora. Through her textile-based practice, she seeks to define, interrogate, and reimagine these complex spaces. Her work often incorporates figurative elements, reflecting her fascination with the significance of representation. She focuses on everyday objects—such as passports, vases, or celebrity postcards—imbuing them with deeper meaning and highlighting their role in shaping personal and collective narratives.
