Souad Abdel Rasoul

Egypt (b.1974)

Souad Abdelrasoul currently lives and works in Cairo. Her artistic practice spans the mediums of drawing, painting, sculpture and graphic design, that fuses abstract and figurative art. In her work she assures that we are part of the earth and the earth is definitely a part of each of us. Her depictions of metamorphosed figures, A do not seek to visualise physical beauty, but attempt to reflect on the connections between humans and the elements of existence such as earth, metals and plants. Tree-like figures, branching veins and arteries, and monstrous insect-like characters merge on canvases and busts to remind viewers of the vital bond between the internal human body and the exterior. By doing this, Abdelrassoul re-conceptualizes the way we perceive space and repurposes notions of body, science, and nature into something strikingly personal, which exalts the feminine, the emotional, the overgrowing natural, and the animalesque.

Abdelrasoul graduated with a BFA in 1998, completed her master’s degree in History of Art in 2005, and in 2012 she completed her PhD in Modern Art History. Since 1998 she has exhibited frequently in group and solo exhibitions in Cairo as well as shows in Nairobi, Beirut and the USA. She has also exhibited at international art fairs in London and Marakech. Her artistic practice spans the mediums of drawing, painting, sculpture and graphic design, intermingling abstract and figurative art. She is also an illustrator of children's books, and conducts artistic workshops for children in Cairo.
