Meriem Bouderbala

Tunisia (b.1960)

Meriem Bouderbala currently resides and works between Paris and Tunis. In 1985, she graduated with honours in visual arts, specialising in engraving and painting, from the Fine Arts School of Aix-en-Provence in France. She also studied at Chelsea School of Art in London.

Drawing inspiration from her French and Tunisian heritage, sheweaves cultural influences into her artistic creations. Her works reflect a fusion of both European and North African artistic traditions, contributing to the transformation of perspectives across the Mediterranean region. Bouderbala explores the representation of the human figure, particularly the feminine form

Bouderbala's artistic career took off with her first solo exhibition in 1987 at the Arab World Institute (IMA) in Paris. Since then, she has exhibited extensively in France, Tunisia, and Morocco. Her works have been showcased in galleries, biennales, and museums across Europe, the USA, and North Africa. Noteworthy exhibitions include "25 years of Arab creativity" at the Arab World Institute in Paris in 2012, the Musée Banque du Maroc in Marrakech in 2011, the Musée de la Monnaie in Paris in 2010, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington in 1994, among others.

Bouderbala's contributions have been recognized through various awards and honours. In 2010, she was awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of the Arts and Letters) in France. Additionally, she has received prestigious prizes such as the Prize of the Foundation Ricard in 1998 and the Centenary Prize of Michelin in 1999. Her artworks have been showcased at renowned international art fairs, including Art Basel Miami Beach, Art Dubai, Abu Dhabi Art, Art Paris, represented by Galerie Patrice Trigano in Paris and Galerie El Marsa in Tunis.

Her work features in several public and private collections, including the Ministry of Culture in Tunisia, the Fondation ELF in Paris, the Arab World Institute in Paris, the Ministry of Culture in France, and the Mairie de Valbonne-Sophia Antipolis in the South of France. Her art has been featured in various French publications and has illustrated numerous poems and writings published by l'Harmattan Paris.
